Future of Regenerative Surgery at the
Kerecis Kansas City Surgical Symposium

Over the past several years, Iceland has emerged as a vibrant center for medical and scientific innovation, with Kerecis at the forefront in the area of wound healing and tissue repair.

The discovery of intact fish skin grafts and research on its surgical applications has led surgeons to develop new treatment protocols that have changed the way they practice reconstructive surgery. In this symposium leading researchers will gather to present surgical techniques and their corresponding treatment algorithms that are designed to shorten length of stay in hospital and reduce the need for autografting.

Previous Kerecis Symposiums have also had the privilege of hosting guest such as president of Iceland, Gudni Th. Johannesson, former Icelandic president, Olafur R. Grimsson, Iceland's Minister of Health and Innovation, the U.S. ambassador to Iceland, and Admiral Matthias Winters of the U.S. Navy.

The Kansas City Surgical Symposium will take place September 22-23, 2023. The chairs of the symposium will be joined by clinical proctors to demonstrate the application techniques along with other reconstructive best practices. The workshop's purpose is to receive hands-on training on the application of intact fish skin grafts and muscle and cutaneous flaps. Further, the lab intends to disseminate clinical best practices and applications and discuss future regenerative research.

Attendance Eligibility

PLEASE NOTE: APLEASE NOTE: Attendance at the Kerecis Kansas City Surgical Symposium is for residency programs and for practicing surgeons in the field of Plastic Surgery, General/Trauma Surgery, and Vascular Surgery, with a focus on tissue injuries and reconstructive procedures for:

Head and Neck Reconstruction
Necrotizing Fasciitis
Traumatic Injury and Degloving
Pressure Ulcers
Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Open Abdomen
Burn Injury
Pilonidal Sinus
Muscle & Cutaneous Flaps

Attendees are required to provide active participation in the full symposium, discussions, and active feedback in the form of answering follow-up questions.

Standard fare air travel, meals, and lodging are covered by Kerecis for attending doctors and medical professionals for the duration of the workshop. Travel has to be booked by Kerecis; self-booked travel arrangements will not be reimbursed. Kerecis does not pay for family members and/or spouses. Government employees are not eligible to participate in this event without prior written approval.

A One Evening, One Morning Event

The Kansas City Surgical Symposium is a one evening, one morning event open to eligible surgeons. Air travel*, meals and lodging for those one night is covered by Kerecis for participating doctors and medical professionals.

* Please note the VA employees are not eligible to participate in the event.

Presenters

Dr. Jenna Wishnew is a board-certified general surgeon. She heads the General Surgery Division of Lam Vascular Associates. She serves as the medical director of the wound care and hyperbaric center at Methodist Richardson Medical Center.

Dr. Wishnew is active in the American Medical Women’s Association and serves as a representative to the American College of Surgeons North Texas Chapter.

Dr. Salvatore Pacella, MD

Dr. Salvatore Pacella obtained his medical degree from the University of Rochester where he graduated with high honors, earning a distinguished Dean’s Letter of Commendation.

He was accepted into the highly competitive Integrated Residency in Plastic Surgery at The University of Michigan, where he was awarded several distinctions for clinical research and teaching including The Micrins Microsurgical Resident Research Award for Clinical Science and The Bronze Beeper Medical Student Teaching Award.

Dr. Pacella serves as Division Head of Plastic Surgery at the prestigious La Jolla-based Scripps Clinic and was voted three years in a row as a Healthcare Champion by the San Diego Business Journal for his dedicated work with skin and breast cancer patients.

Dr. Dane Daley is a fellowship-trained hand surgeon and board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, brachial plexus surgery, and congenital hand surgery.

Dr. Daley is currently an assistant professor and the division chair of the orthopedic hand and microvascular surgery department at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He leads residents in orthopedic surgical mission work in Bonne Fin, Haiti, which is a significant focus in his career. He earned his medical degree from East Tennessee State University Medical School in Johnson City, TN. Dr. Daley completed his orthopedic residency at MUSC and then went on to complete a fellowship in hand surgery at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC.

He has received numerous awards for research during his academic career. He is the president of the Charleston Hand Society and desires to improve the quality of hand surgery in the Charleston area.

The Kansas City Surgical Symposium is a one-evening, one-morning event. For attending surgeons, Kerecis covers standard airfare, one night’s lodging, and meals for the duration of the workshop in return for full participation in the symposium and the follow-up surveys. Kerecis does not pay or reimburse for travel arrangements for family members, including spouses.

Attire for the event is business casual.

Protective covering and clothes will be provided during the hands on session as needed.
